Why Sunglasses Matter Even on Cloudy Days

People often think about sunscreen when they think about sun protection, but UV exposure can affect your eyes too, even on cloudy days.

Good sunglasses do more than make things more comfortable outdoors. They help protect your eyes, reduce glare, and make bright conditions easier on your eyes.

UV Exposure Isn’t Just a Concern on Sunny Days

Many people assume UV exposure is only a concern on bright, sunny days, but UV rays can still pass through clouds. Over time, UV exposure increases the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, eyelid cancer, and photokeratitis, sometimes referred to as “snow blindness.”

Reflected UV light is just as damaging as direct exposure. Snow reflects up to 85% of UV rays and water reflects up to 100%. In Saskatchewan, summer often means long days at the lake and outdoors. Direct UV from the sun plus reflected rays from the water make good sunglasses important for more than just comfort.

What Should I Look For When Buying New Sunglasses?

Look for full UVA and UVB protection:

·         The most important thing to look for in sunglasses is 100% UVA and UVB protection or a UV400 label. This helps block harmful UV rays and protect your eyes from long-term sun exposure.

Dark lenses don’t always mean better protection:

·         Darker lenses may feel more comfortable in bright sunlight, but they don’t automatically provide better UV protection. Dark lenses without a proper UV rating can put your eyes at higher risk because your pupils will dilate and let more UV in.

Polarized lenses reduce glare:

·         Polarized lenses help reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water and roads, especially in bright sunlight. This helps make your vision clearer and more comfortable by cutting down on reflections. Just remember that polarization and UV protection are not the same thing.

Do Kids Need Sunglasses Too?

For many of the same reasons adults do, children need protection from UV rays as well. Kids typically have 3x as much UV exposure as adults because they spend more time outdoors and the clear lenses in their eyes can't filter as much UV. In fact, 80% of our lifetime UV exposure happens by age 18! Protecting their eyes from UV exposure can help support long-term eye health while they enjoy time outdoors. That's why it's important to choose the right sunglasses.

We carry a wide range of kids' Babiator sunglasses and can put prescription sun lenses or Transitions into any kids frame. We want to make sure your active little ones are protected, comfortable, and safe.
