Frequently Asked Questions

We know you may have questions before your visit, and we’re always happy to help. Below are some of the most common questions we hear from patients. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out to our team anytime.

Eye Exams & Appointments

How much is an eye exam?

Our comprehensive eye exams include advanced diagnostic imaging, such as Optomap retinal imaging and OCT. This allows us to get a more complete picture of your eye health and detect changes early. Some clinics may charge additional fees for this type of testing. At Vista Eyecare, these services are included as part of your exam, so there are no surprise add-on fees.

Our exam fees vary based on age and whether you wear contact lenses:

Comprehensive Eye Exams (Non-Contact Lens Wearers):

  • Ages 18 - 39: $169
  • Ages 40+: $189

Comprehensive Eye Exams with Contact Lens Evaluation:

  • Ages 18 - 39: $199
  • Ages 40+: $219

Children under 18 are covered for a yearly eye exam through Saskatchewan Health.

What is included in an eye exam?

Your eye exam is about more than just your prescription. We take a comprehensive look at your vision and overall eye health.

This includes:

  • A detailed review of your vision and eye health history
  • A personalized vision assessment
  • Evaluation of eye health and early signs of disease
  • Recommendations tailored to your lifestyle and visual needs

We take the time to understand how you use your eyes day-to-day so we can guide you toward the right solutions.

How long does an eye exam take?

Most appointments take about 60-90 minutes. This allows us to complete a thorough assessment without feeling rushed.

How often should I have an eye exam?

For most adults, we recommend an eye exam every 2 years. Some patients may need to be seen more often depending on their eye health, medical history, or visual needs.

If you are unsure when your last eye exam was or want more guidance about when you should be getting checked, our staff are always here to help.

Do I need a referral to book an eye exam?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with our office at any time.

When is your next available appointment?

Our availability changes throughout the day as appointments are booked and adjusted and can vary depending on the time of year.

The easiest way to see our most up-to-date availability is through our online booking, which shows real-time appointment options and lets you choose a time that works best for you, or by calling our office and one of our staff will be happy to help find a time for you.

What should I bring to my appointment?

To help us make your visit as smooth as possible, please bring:

  • Your current glasses
  • Your contact lenses (and wear them at least 2 hours before your appointment)
  • Contact lens boxes or packaging if purchased elsewhere
  • A list of medications, eye drops, vitamins, and supplements
  • Sunglasses, as your eyes may be light-sensitive after certain tests

Do I have to have my eyes dilated or the eye pressure checked?

Certain tests, like dilation or pressure checks, help us get a more complete picture of your eye health.

Not every exam requires dilation, but in some cases it allows us to better assess the health of the back of your eyes.

We’ll always explain what we recommend and why, and make decisions together based on your needs and comfort.

If your eyes are dilated, you may be more sensitive to light and your vision may feel slightly blurred for a few hours, mostly up close. Many patients are still able to drive, but you may prefer to bring sunglasses or arrange a ride if you’re unsure.

I only want my vision checked. Do I still need a full exam?

We understand this question comes up often. While updating your prescription is important, a full eye exam allows us to check for early signs of eye conditions that may not affect your vision right away.

Even if you are seeing an ophthalmologist, their care is often focused on specific conditions or areas of the eye. A comprehensive eye exam helps ensure we’re looking at your overall eye health and catching any changes early.

Our goal is to support your vision and eye health as a whole, and we’re always happy to work alongside other providers involved in your care.

Will I receive my prescription after my exam?

Yes. At the end of your visit, we’ll review your results together and provide your prescription along with any recommendations.
