Understanding Myopia

As a parent, you want to set your child up for success in every possible way. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming more common in children and can progress as they grow. Beyond needing stronger glasses, increasing myopia can raise the risk of more serious eye conditions later in life.

At Vista Eyecare, we provide myopia management in Saskatoon with a proactive and personalized approach. Our goal is to give your child clear vision today while supporting their long-term eye health.

LEARN ABOUT

What is Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia is a common vision condition where distance vision becomes blurred. It often develops in childhood and can progress as the eyes grow.

In a myopic eye, light focuses slightly in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This makes distant objects harder to see clearly.

LEARN ABOUT

Why Early Myopia Management Matters for Children

Myopia is more than just needing stronger glasses. As myopia increases, so does the risk of certain eye diseases later in life, especially when it starts at younger ages.

Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Myopic macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma

By monitoring and managing myopia early, we can often slow progression and reduce these risks. Lower myopia also means thinner eyeglass lenses, more contact lens options, and increased eligibility for laser vision correction as an adult. Our goal is not only to help your child see clearly today, but also to support healthier eyes for the future.

HOW TO PREPARE

What to Expect at a Myopia Management Assessment

We take a detailed and personalized approach to understanding your child’s vision and their risk for myopia progression.

Your visit may include:

  • Axial length and pupil size measurement using MYAH
  • Corneal mapping with Medmont topography
  • Optomap retinal imaging
  • Cycloplegic refraction

After reviewing the results, we'll discuss the treatment options that best fit your child's eyes, lifestyle, and stage of myopia. Our goal is to help you feel informed and confident in the decisions you make for your child's vision and eye health.

As your child grows, we'll continue to monitor their progress and adjust the plan as needed to support their long-term eye health.

Myopia Management Assessment Fees:

Initial Assessment: $150

VISTA EYECARE

Myopia Management Treatment

Every child is unique, so we tailor treatment plans to their specific needs. Based on your child’s eyes, lifestyle, and stage of myopia, we may recommend one or a combination of the following options.

We will guide you through these proven evidence-based myopia management treatments, so you can feel confident choosing what will be most effective for your child long term.

Glasses with Specialty Lenses

Specialty glasses lenses are designed to not only correct vision but also help slow myopia progression by controlling how light focuses on the retina.

At Vista Eyecare, we offer MiYOSMART iQ and Stellest 2.0, two of the latest spectacle lens technologies designed specifically for myopia management in children.

These lenses provide clear central vision while gently influencing how light reaches the peripheral retina, which may help slow the eye growth associated with myopia progression.

We'll explain the differences, answer your questions, and recommend the option that best fits your child's needs.

Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses

These contact lenses use a similar approach to specialty glasses but in a contact lens format. They provide clear vision while helping to slow myopia progression.Options such as MiSight, Acuvue Abiliti, and NaturalVue lenses are designed specifically for myopia management and can be a great fit for active children who prefer not to wear glasses during the day.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Ortho-K lenses are custom designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye (cornea). In the morning, your child can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses.

Ortho-K is a non-surgical and reversible option that has been shown to slow myopia progression while offering freedom from daytime correction.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine drops can help slow myopia progression and are often used on their own or alongside other treatments.

This option is simple to use and can be a helpful addition to a personalized treatment plan.

Myopia Management FAQs

What age should my child start myopia management?

Myopia can begin in early childhood. The earlier it is detected, the more effectively it can be managed.

Can myopia be reversed?

Myopia cannot be reversed, but it can often be slowed with the right treatment approach.

Are myopia management treatments safe?

Yes. Treatments like specialty lenses, contact lenses, and low-dose atropine have been well studied and are commonly used.

How do I know which treatment is right for my child?

We assess your child’s eyes, lifestyle, and risk factors then discuss the different treatment options with you and your child to decide the most appropriate option.
