Getting Contact Lenses

Before you can start wearing contact lenses, there are a few things we need to check. Our contact lens exam and fitting process is designed to determine if you can wear contact lenses safely and if you would benefit from specialty lenses for specific eye conditions.

Whether the appointment is for you or a loved one, here is what you can expect from our contact lens consultation process.

The Eye Exam

We begin every contact lens appointment with an eye exam. Eye exams help us determine your prescription and discover any eye conditions that could affect contact lens wear.

Almost everyone can wear contact lenses safely, but some issues can affect your candidacy, like:

Once we determine if you’re a candidate for contact lenses, it’s time to find you the right pair.

Fitting Your Contacts

The fitting process is important for determining which contact lens will work best and feel the most comfortable for you. We take detailed measurements of your eye’s shape and size, corneal parameters, and tear film quality to find you the best option.

You may have “hard-to-fit eyes,” but that’s okay! We offer a range of specialty contacts that can still give you the clear vision you’re looking for.

Trying Them On!

Now it’s time for the fun part!

After we fit your contacts, we’ll give you an opportunity to test them out and get used to how they feel. This trial period may last a week or two, and there’s a possibility we may have to adjust your contacts to ensure you have the best experience.

If you feel like your eyes aren’t adjusting to your contact lenses, or you experience redness and irritation, please remove them and call us as soon as possible.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Consultations

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are popular for their ease of use, durability, and clarity. RGP lenses are excellent for correcting astigmatism, but they might take longer to adjust to when compared to traditional soft contact lenses.

Co-Management

If you have an irregular cornea from a condition like keratoconus, scleral contact lenses may be the perfect choice for you. Scleral lenses are larger than traditional contact lenses, allowing them to “vault” over your cornea while resting on the whites of your eyes (the sclera). They are surprisingly comfortable and provide excellent vision correction.

Myopia Management Lenses

If your child has myopia, we might recommend MiSight contact lenses to slow its progression. MiSight contact lenses use a technology called myopic defocus to slow myopia while simultaneously correcting your child’s vision.

Abiliti Contact Lenses

ACUVUE Abiliti contact lenses are soft contact lenses designed to manage myopia progression in children. These lenses are worn during the day, and use RingBoost technology to help slow myopia progression.

With their silicone hydrogel lens material, these lenses provide comfort and breathability. These contact lenses offer a proactive and convenient solution to address your child’s vision needs.

Discover Frame-free Vision

Did you know that over 290 million contact lenses end up in Canadian landfills and waterways every year? Vista Eyecare is proud to offer contact lens recycling at our office.

Visit our office to drop off any brand of used contact lenses and contact lens packaging (yes, that’s the plastic packaging, foil, and the contact lenses themselves). We ship everything to TerraCycle, which keeps the harmful microplastics out of the environment by converting them into plastic pellets that can be moulded into new products like playground equipment and park benches.

We can also provide you with a contact lens waste collection bag to use at home. Please note that if you’re shipping your used contact lenses, UPS and other courier companies might refuse leaking or wet products. Ensure all liquid is disposed of properly before packing up your contact lens waste.
